Its taken me a little time to write this review. Our family of 4 spent 4 nights in Vancouver and then drove up to Whistler to spend 3 nights at the Fairmont during half term in October 2009. We knew that Whistler was 'between seasons' and expected most of the shops/attractions and restaurants to be closed. Our three days were incredible and didn't disappoint. You just have to go zip lining. Our room at the Fairmont cost us $104 per night...just incredible, I told my wife that we would be able to sleep there but wouldn't be able to afford to eat there. How wrong I was...we were informed on checking in that each night between 5-7pm we could in the restaurant for $10 per adult and $5 per child. Our bill for the evening with tax was $34. We will be back.

We normally stay in condos when on ski trips so this was a big splurge. We've experienced high line ski resorts throughout the world from an après ski and dining perspective, this was the first time we stayed in one. WOW! At one point I thought a hand would suddenly appear to wipe my nose for me. No carrying skis and boots due to the strategically located ski concierge (steps from the lift and under the hotel) that stores them for you overnight. The location is so phenomenal that if you could invent a little jet thrust on your skis you would end your last run up on your room balcony. From absolute beginners to expert skiiers, children to adults, there was a friendly and patient instructor for you. Despite the similar price tag, this isn't a Vail or Aspen-like "snow bunny" resort. Guests were unpretentious, apre-ski was quiet and relaxing.

The Fairmont Chateau Whistler is one of those hotels/destinations that I almost wanted to cry leaving. The hotel staff are extremely friendly. They genuinely like their job and love their home. The hotel is in immaculate conditions gearing up for the Winter Olympics. The rooms were a nice size and the decor went perfect with the mountains. The hot tub and heated swimming pool were in great condition and were a great way to end the day. Followed by the steam room. The hotel is also conveniently located at the base of Blackcomb mountain with a great ski valet shop downstairs. I stopped in the bar ever evening for a warm drink while a talented musician played live music every evening. The waiters get to know you and tell you great mountain stories. The locals also prefer the summer months so I look forward to returning this summer to experience that side of Whistler. Stay at this hotel you will not be disappointed. Also if you are a sushi fan the sushi is a must. I am from the US East Coast and have never had salmon like that before. The salmon is so bright and clean it looks like Tuna. The Albacore tuna is so fresh and amazing. If you are a fan of Toro they have the best Toro I have ever eaten.
For a little extra adventure we booked the ziplinning tour. Great people and a lot of fun....I highly recommend it.

We took advantage of the excellent pre-Olympic deals on offer and plumped for the Fairmont for our first Whistler experience. A large 'chain' hotel is not normally our choice but I have to say that the Fairmont manages to create a personal, intimate atmosphere despite its size. Much of this is down to the excellent staff - to a person they were well trained, efficient and friendly and seemed to take genuine pleasure in their work.
I can only echo what the most recent reviewer has said: in terms of ski convenience it was bliss to be able to potter up only a few steps before feeling snow under your feet - and even better to be able to lurch down the same steps at the end of a day and get rid of all your ski kit to the waiting concierge!
I also endorse the previous reviewer's tips on finding ways around the eye-wateringly expensive hotel food and drink. Our small fridge was always well stocked from the local supermarkets! We found our best value in the hotel was the delicious 3-course meal in the Wine Room - $89 including three generous glasses of matched wines - and the Portobello deli for decent breakfasts. But the whole village was pretty pricey, especially for wine. Our favourite eating place was Pasta Lupino, a very popular casual eatery where the food was great and the wine didn't break the bank.
Previous reviews have been pretty scathing about the rooms. We had a Fairmont Gold, which was spacious and decently decorated, witha very comfy bed and sofa. The public rooms/bar were quite dimly lit at night, but all had a welcoming atmosphere.
All in all, a lovely hotel. The feel is more like a well-run country property than a slick international outfit - and in our view it's all the better for it. The location is quiet, so it's not for anyone looking for nightlife on the doorstep, but it's only a 10-minute walk from as much razzle as you could want - Whistler on Australia Day was pretty lively!

My husband and I have been coming to Whistler for many years and we have stayed at the Fairmont the last 3 years. I don’t think that I will ever stay anywhere else.
Bluntly, ALL hotel rooms in Whistler are small and almost al hotels are older or “rustic” or “lodge-like.” Absolutely, the TVs at the Fairmont are old and the phones need an upgrade. Ok, that’s the bad part of the hotel. Here are the good:
Ski in/out: This is the best part of the Fairmont. You walk down in the morning with your warm fuzzy Uggs or other comfies. Afterwards, you ski up to the entrance of the valet, leave your ski/board and boots and grab the warm fuzzies that you left in the morning. And then, you get to walk directly into the warm hearth of the hotel. Aaaaahhhh.
Food: The food is exquisite albeit expensive. Here is a TIP: Eat at the smaller eatery in the basement, The Portobello, for breakfast and/or lunch. Or, you can go to the IGA/Market and pick up snacks for the room including some fabulous Canadian cheese, deli meats, bread, chips, etc. I will say that the Fairmont has some wonderful food including the Montreal Smoked Meat Benedict for breakfast, the Dry Spiced Chicken Wings or, for apres ski, the Chocolate Fondue for dessert. Mmmmmm!
Drinks: Again, the Fairmont has lovely libations but they are expensive. Here’s a TIP: right across from the Fairmont entrance is the BC Liquor Store that has an amazing wine selection. They also have ice cold bear and an assortment of spirits. We always stock up the fridge the first night.
Spa: Did I say how expensive everything is? Ok, well, the spa is no exception. I will say that I had the best, I mean the absolute best, spa treatments ever at the Vida Spa at the Fairmont. My skin want from dry and wind burned to soft and supple. I highly recommend the Collagen Facial--VERY expensive but it changed my entire skin. Even my husband commented on how lovely my skin felt. They use Valmont products that are beyond compare so it’s worth the $$ once in a while.
Health Club: I love the Health Club. 2 pools: 1 for lap swimming only and an indoor/outdoor one for the family. Steam room in the locker rooms (aka ok to go nude) and a coed sauna (aka NOT ok to go nude). All of which are HOT and feel wonderful after a day on the slopes.
For the pets/kids: I absolutely LOVE the Fairmont (or the FURmont) for allowing our fur -babies to come along. They have a pet menu beds, bones and will arrange a walker or day care for your pet punkin’ while you are doing your thing. If you have children, then you have an absolute paradise of child-care options.

If you have a little more in the budget it would be well spent staying at this hotel. We were there off season so got very competitive rates, excellent accommodation and the service and facilities were as you would expect. We were stranded for a further 2 days in Whistler due to rock falls and the hotel honoured the rates we secured through expedia without proof or hassle and also helped us cancel our onward hotel.

Excellent location for skiing. Within walking distance to Whistler Village. Breakfast buffet is just awesome. Staff are very friendly. A bit pricey. Check out the Aboriginal Museum which is a two minute walk from the Hotel.
