Top 10 things for the Whistler visitor to do during the 2010 Olympics
|
Whistler will be packed with sports action during the 17 days of the Games,
but there will be plenty to do beyond that.
1. Skiing at Whistler Blackcomb
With most people wrapped up in Olympic activities, the slopes at North America's
top-rated ski resort are bound to be quieter than usual. Whistler Blackcomb will
actually have 90 per cent of its terrain open (that's about 7,500 acres) with
only runs along the race course in Creekside closed. (Bonus: you might even be
able to catch some of the speed events course-side from special viewing areas
set up on the race courses.) So strap on your skis or board and head to the
hills for your pick of powder lines.
2. Canada Counts: A Salute to Excellence
Mountain Galleries is getting into the Olympic spirit in a big way. They're
featuring an incredible roster of artists, including Canadian pop art icon
Charles Pachter, throughout the Games in their Olympic show, Canada Counts: A
Salute to Excellence. They'll be holding artist demonstrations and daily public
receptions at the gallery from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with wine tastings. They'll be
giving away a piece of artwork every time a Canadian wins a medal.
3. Fire & Ice
For the past 12 years, Whistler Blackcomb has hosted weekly Fire & Ice shows
every Sunday evening. During the Games, these iconic shows are being amped up to
feature 18 talented skiers and snowboarders taking part in a choreographed
nightly performance in Skiers Plaza, throwing down tricks and jumping through
three flaming hoops. Toss in dancers, fire spinners and music from the likes of
Chromeo, Kid Koala, Maestro Fresh Wes and Grand Analog, and you have a spectacle
that definitely isn't for the faint of heart.
4. Jamaican spirit
Whistler will have a decidedly international flavour during the Games as
countries from around the world gather to compete. Many of the visiting nations
will have "houses" in the resort, and while some are private, others are
welcoming everyone in to check out their respective cultures. The Jamaican
Bobsleigh Federation has teamed up with local hot spot Savage Beagle to offer
visitors a chance to hang out with team members, sample Jamaican cuisine and
beer and unwind to reggae rhythms.
5. Canada Olympic House
The community's new $11.6-million public library is being transformed into
Whistler Canada Olympic House, playing host to international dignitaries,
tourism reps, media, government partners and various other VIPs. But each
Saturday, the public is invited to hang out with Olympic athletes and learn more
about them and their sports.
6. Whistler Film Festival
The Whistler Film Festival Society has been busily cultivating an impressive
selection of short films that capture the true spirit of the region. Started in
2005, the Whistler Stories project has created a collection of five-minute films
that touch on everything from the legendary Crazy Canucks to chance encounters
on chairlifts. If you don't catch a few of the films on an Air Canada flight on
your way to the Games, meander down Village Stroll and keep an eye on the many
Whistler Live! screens to check out the tales and characters that make this town
so special.
7. PRIDE House
For the first time in Olympic history, there's an open and welcoming venue for
gay and lesbian athletes, coaches, family and friends. Of course, everyone else
is also welcome to visit PRIDE House, located in the Pan Pacific Whistler
Village Centre, which is sure to be an inviting social hub from 10 a.m. to 10
p.m. each day.
8. Show on ice
Vancouver-based theatre company The Only Animal is staging a site-specific
theatrical performance on the shores of Lost Lake Park during the Games as part
of the Cultural Olympiad programming.
A fiery love story set in a frozen, postapocalyptic tundra, this must-see show
takes place on a stage made of tonnes of ice and snow housed in a 44-foot
geodesic dome. Tickets to the show are $19 to $50, but you can also ski to the
site with Cross Country Connection (equipment rentals are an additional $25) or
indulge in a fondue dinner and horse-drawn sleigh ride with Outdoor Adventures
(for an additional $109).
9. The Whistler Museum
Find out what makes year-round residents of this town of 10,000 tick. The
Whistler Museum just reopened to the public after being closed for two years,
finally unveiling the new exhibit, Whistler's Olympic Journey. The exhibit
explores the community's four successive Olympic bids starting in the late
1960s, showcasing how Whistler has grown from a quaint weekend ski hill to an
international resort destination.
10. The best bar
After a day of adrenaline-pumping sports action, you're bound to be wiped. Head
to the Four Seasons' Fifty-Two 80 Bistro and Bar to check out acoustic covers by
Whistler's beloved musical duo, The Hairfarmers, who are set to perform on
successive Thursdays - Feb. 11, Feb. 18 and Feb. 25 - and maybe even indulge in
a flaming 2010 Torch cocktail ($28), which is a combination of pear purée,
MonaVie energy drink and lemongrass-infused vodka served in a copper,
torch-inspired glass.
