Review of the Red Lion Inn Victoria

Good hotel, good price!
The room was a bit smaller than I was expecting but it was very nice. If you
want peace and quiet thought this hotel may not be for you. It was a bit noisy.
Otherwise it was a great hotel for the price. Also the pool is only open in the
summers.

The guy at the front desk was down to earth. Nothing fake, no fake smile, no
fake attitude. It's an Inn, not a Hotel, so don't expect it to be fancy. Great
place just to crash for the night. I had 2 extra people on the trip, so we
needed an extra room. The guy gave us the same pricing but just the extra HST
tax which was ok. 5 min drive from Downtown Victoria/Chinatown, across from a
small mall. Would stay there again.

Great place to stay
I visited Victoria in late January and I am so glad that I chose to stay at the
Red Lion! The staff at the front desk were friendly and helpful. The room was
the standard hotel-type room but the bed was comfortable, there was a microwave,
small fridge, and coffee maker, a flat screen TV, and a desk and two chairs (one
with a footstool). The only fault I could find was the state of the carpet but
this was just a minor point. The location of the hotel was really good, on some
good bus routes and close to two shopping centres and many good restaurants.
When I return to Victoria, I'll be staying there again!
Area recommendations
Oak Bay is a great place to visit. A marina is located at the south end of the
bay and you can walk along Beach Drive admiring the beautiful houses. Further
along Beach Drive, if you walk down the side streets towards the bay, you can
walk along the small beach. There is also a park with a children's playground
and public washrooms. Don't forget to visit nearby Oak Bay Village. Take the 2
or 2A bus to get to Oak Bay.
Getting around
Buy a Victoria Transit day pass, well worth the money! I took the bus to
different areas of the city and when I was ready to go to another area of the
city or return to my hotel, I just got back on another bus. Pick up a Rider's
Guide, it has maps and timetables for all the buses in the Victoria area...

Booked directly with the hotel. I told them i would be travelling with 2 young
girls and required a suite (one bedroom). I also told them that i was travelling
with two other parties also staying at the Red Lion. I asked if i could be on
the same floor and was told they would see what they could do (not once was i
told that i would be given their back-up room...because that is what it is).
Check-in receptionist was pleasant and polite. We were given room 140 (while the
others were on the 3rd and 4th floors). Took us a while to figure out where our
room was, because our room was located on the same floor as the Chinese
Restaurant........room 140 is the ONLY room on the floor along with the
restaurant!! Only a few meters separated our room door and the restaurant entry.
We were accosted with the very strong smells of the restaurant as soon as we hit
the stairwell to the 1st floor (which is actually below the lobby level). From
the low ceiling tiles, fluorescent ceiling fixtures, commercial exhaust fans and
carpet it was obvious that our 'room' used to be an old office. The main room
consisted of 2 very uncomfortable thin wall beds, cheap office furniture and
curtains that did not cover the windows fully. Bathroom was clean but no
toiletries to speak of. The bedroom had two beds which were of average comfort
but no clock and the TV had no remote (the girls were not impressed). When i
tried to get moved to another room...and i was ready to take any room, of any
size on any other floor i was told the hotel was completely sold out (could be
or not?). Upon visisting with our friends staying on the other floors that is
when we really realized how bad room 140 was...this room is saved as a last
resort and too bad for the poor souls who get it. So warning all who plan to
book at the Red Lion Inn......make absolutely sure you do not get room
140...unless you like to pay the same as the other patrons but get far far far
less!!!
