Review of the Red Lion Inn Victoria

This place was about what you would expect for a budget hotel; but the price was
so much better than anything else we could find in Victoria (even budget hotels)
that I'm giving it a 4 star rating.
The lobby and common areas were no frills; but the rooms were clean and
relatively comfy...and WiFi worked fine! Our group had three rooms and one of
them included a small kitchenette.
A couple of things to be aware of: You need a car because this hotel is located
a fair distance from the city center. Also, there is nothing of real interest
around the hotel (other than strip mall like stores...and I think there might be
mall nearby). But one thing I DID LIKE was the bike/walking path that runs
behind the hotel. We walked along the paved path for a couple of miles (RT) and
stopped at Starbucks in route home (located a block or two from the hotel).
A couple of reviewers referenced the liquor store and strip club. The liquor
store is front and center so you can't miss it; but if there was a strip club,
we didn't notice it.
My preference is to stay closer to the city center...but I would stay here again
and I would absolutely recommend this place to the cost conscience traveler.

I had my third stay at the Red Lion. It is one of Victoria's best values for
adults during the sunny seasons. However, I have stayed at many inner harbour
hotels during the rainy winters, when rates are discounted, and shorter walks
are preferable. My trips usually combine work and vacation. I usually visit some
downtown restaurants and specialty shops, but rarely visit the tourist
attractions.
The Red Lion is a modern inn with well equipped suites and good Internet, about
2 miles from "postcard Victoria". I rarely rent cars, but it is on Victoria's
main transit corridor, giving me very good access to downtown and BC Ferries. It
is also a by-request frequent stop for the Akal Airporter van, and is beside
Victoria's main bike path.
The Red Lion is in a busy commercial neighborhood between the Uptown and Mayfair
shopping centers and several car dealerships. Until Uptown finishes, most
restaurants are at least 3 blocks away, except for fast food and the Red Lion's
Chinese restaurant. The nearest breakfasts are A&W and McDonald's, both across
busy Douglas St. However, all rooms have a fridge, microwave and coffee maker. A
Wal-Mart Supercentre and Save-On Foods are within walking distance.
For a much lower sunny season rate than the downtown business hotels, the Red
Lion sacrifices location, free newspapers, business centres and affinity points.
Also, despite the office chair, the desk felt too high for extensive work.
However, those are minor issues.

My co-worker and I came to Victoria in April to work at the construction site of
the Uptown shopping center. We stayed in a 2 double bed room with a kitchenette
at the Red Lion Inn. The room was recently renovated and very functional. It
took only 2 min for us to walk to the uptown center and the hotel is very
convenient for us. We will be back to this hotel in the future.

Staff was impolite, could not make eye contact and was not the least bit
interested in making sure that I stayed to check in. Made reservations well
ahead of time and travelled for two days to get there and no room was available;
was asked to go away and come back in two or three hours because they had been
"full up last night"
