Review of the Howard Johnson Hotel Victoria

Positive: - rate through Expedia / good and smooth -
very nice mini suite with all back up we asked for /
fridge + small kitchen area etc + microwave. Small pool
area, washing machines, parking lot. SAFE! - good
service - good no smoking room with out smelling -
surprisingly quiet towards the park side (ask for that)
and no traffic view at all - nice personal. Hopefully
will go on: - Everything to that rate!
Area recommendations
There are so MANY nice things to do and see in Victoria
- so the best thing is to visit the Tourist Info in the
harbour area. However we liked very much the Museum 2nd
and 3rd floor's and the Legislative building /
Parliament from both outside and inside. A trip with the
small nice boat taxis to or from the Fisherman Wharf
(nice to take a brake in) is also what we like! Victoria
needs in it self not less than 2 days by foot as we see
it. Take in the weather forecast BEFORE you go there!
Review of the Howard Johnson Hotel Victoria

My negative review revolves almost entirely on the poor
efforts of the housekeeping staff, and obviously the
management who doesn't take the time to monitor the work
being done. Our pre-booked 3 day stay was a constant
disappointment due to coming back to the hotel after
being away all day to an uncleaned room, and subsequent
frustration with their slow reluctant effort to make it
right. The place is about as inexpensive as you could
find, but you get a worn dirty uncomfortable experience
in return for what you do pay... If I could leave a
rating lower than terrible I would.

Stayed at this hotel in several occasions as our
daughter was in boarding school in Victoria.
Nice, friendly staff and overall clean.
Perfect for a short stay. Conveniently located but as in
other Canadian cities, we will need a car if wanting to
get anywhere fast.
Good value for money!
Review of the Howard Johnson Hotel Victoria
August 6, 2011
We stayed here for two nights the first week in August.
The rooms, furniture, and fixtures are a bit worn - but
everything in our room was very clean. We stayed in a
mini-suite, which had a "kitchenette" included. We
didn't use it much, but the room was same price (about
$100 US per night) as a regular room so we went for it.
The refrigerator was spotless, and there was also a
microwave, coffee maker, basic dishes, silverware,
cookware and utensils. If I had known that it had the
cookware, I probably would have brought some food with
us to save money. There is no continental breakfast here
- also just something to keep in mind, but not a
negative for the hotel.
Also included in the room was an ironing board and iron
and a small hair dryer. There were ample towels and
pillows for two - but if you have more people, you might
want more. In addition to the queen bed, there was also
a fold-out bed/sofa, a small table with two chairs, a
desk with another chair, an air conditioner (smaller
unit - didn't get the room cold but kept it very
comfortable), a tv, a dresser that had a couple of
helpful guide books. The shower has a dispenser with
shampoo/conditioner/shower gel - which is a great idea -
but maybe something to be aware of if you were counting
on having little individual bottles.
We found the bed to be very comfortable, and the
curtains were great at keeping the light out - we slept
late both days, which we never do in hotels. I did also
try the pool one morning (it's open 8a-9pm I think) and
the facilities there were very clean as well. The pool
is on the deep side if you have small children - 3ft -
5ft - 9ft. But the water in the pool was clean - I
didn't see any junk floating in it at all - and the
temperature was very nice. There's also a small fitness
room by the pool - and those are the only "onlookers"
you will have if you are swimming. The pool area is in
its own room, so you don't have to worry about random
people walking by and peering in at you. On the
downside, there's no sunlight coming into the room but
that was fine with me.
It wasn't as close to downtown as I would have liked -
there isn't much to "walk to" nearby, but there is a bus
stop about a block away. The front desk staff were also
able to provide us with small currency exchange, which
was great.
There is also a bar in the hotel. My boyfriend had the
wings there and said they were the best and the cheapest
wings (25-cents each) he's ever had - and he's had a lot
of wings! The bartender was friendly, and the bar is no
frills - they don't do anything "fancy" - but everything
is very reasonably priced.
