I stayed for 2 weeks in Oct and my experience was mostly positive. However, with
my length of stay, I would have liked a refrig or a microwave in my room. Fair
warning-there is a pub on the ground floor and my room was right above it. A few
nights some very rude, inconsiderate pub patrons were standing and talking very
loud for about an hour so this can be a problem if you like peace and quiet. The
staff was very helpful and friendly and I would stay again but not in room near
the pub entrance. When I asked about the pub noise before I made my reservation,
the desk clerk said the noise would not be a problem. Wrong. The rooms near the
pub can be noisy and the staff should just be honest about it. Overall, I
enjoyed my stay for the price I paid..

The staff and cleanliness were terrific. The room was ready when I was told it
would be. Staying there on a Saturday night I was wary of noisy passers-by, but
that was a non-issue. Sleep quality was mediocre because the person I was
sharing the room with (my brother) was still up while I was trying to sleep. The
beds were very comfortable. I wouldn't call this a complaint, but if you're a
light sleeper, you may find that the hallway noise gets through the door without
much difficulty.

I booked the James Bay Inn on a whim after deciding to hop over to Victoria for
the weekend, and was pleasantly surprised. Sure, it isn't a Westin or a Hilton,
but for the price, what do you expect? The room was cozy, but had all the
basics, including a comfy bed and good sized washroom. And I liked the quirky
aspects of it, like the radiator and the slightly sloping floors. I'm certainly
more likely to remember it than, say, a Travelodge. My room was completely
clean, the staff were pleasant, and the location is unbeatable (few blocks
outside of downtown, almost right beside Beacon Hill Park) and safe.
And, seriously, the hotel is three stories high-- it's not like they are asking
you to carry your bags a mile barefoot. Yes, good to know if you have limited
mobility, but, really, for easily $40 cheaper a night than a chain downtown, I
will take the extra exercise.
Plus, they have free wireless that is actually really fast-- unlike most of the
chains that charge you $12 a day!
The restaurant was pretty standard. Friendly staff, good selection, but there
are definitely better restaurants downtown. You do get 15% of a meal, though,
and their breakfast selection looked good.
One thing worth remembering-- there is no blow dryers, so bring your own!

Loved the residential neighborhood. Was not as close to downtown Victoria as we
understood from the website but still within a 15 minute walk to town. Lobby was
cozy & welcoming. Front desk staff was a bit aloof at first but helpful when
asked. The room & bathroom were clean but water temperature during showers was
unpredictable. Had a nice bay window (that opened) & a heater in the form of a
fake fireplace that added a quirky charm. Looks like the TV & duct-taped remote
could use an upgrade but both still worked. We stayed on the third floor & had
to shlep our own bags up both flights of stairs which was fine for us but anyone
with physical challenges should probably stay elsewhere. Once you are off the
ground floor, it's clear how old this inn is. The floors are slanted to the
degree of feeling like the building is composting. The physical set-up of the
hallways is strange & awkward. Walking through the long hallways, & around
corners, especially at night, gave us a strong sense of being watched. And not
from a guest or employee - this place is genuinely creepy! Would likely NOT stay
again, just for the uneasy feeling we experienced.

We absolutely love staying at the James Bay Inn. It's our type of place. It's
cozy and comfortable and clean. Every time we come to Victoria we stay at the
James Bay Inn. We don't even think of staying anywhere else. I feel sad for the
negative comments some people have made about this place. Those people don't
deserve to stay at the James Bay Inn. This hotel has a warm, friendly, family
atmosphere. If this doesn't appeal to some people they should go elsewhere and
leave this place to those of us who appreciate it.

Buyer Beware !!! We went there trying to take in the culture and history of
Victoria. When we first entered the front desk person did not greet us in a
professional manner, We were given our keys to a room that was on the 3rd floor.
We had to climb 3 different levels of stairs with our heavy luggage, there was
no porter to assist and the inn keeper didn't even feign interest in assisting
us, he was more engrossed on the TV playing in the background. When we opened
our room we where greeted by a room with a rickety chair that was just thrown in
there. Most of the electrical outlets did't work or would arc and the smell of
ozone would fill the room. You have to pay for every local call which is
typically included in most places, there is no room service. The shower had no
working fan so if you do decide to wash be prepared for condensation everywhere.
The fire exit was difficult to find if there was an emergency ! There is no
fridge and we had no clean water in the room and the vending machine only
accepted quarters from 2002 and before. So if you had quarters past that date
you where out of luck. The room did not have air conditioning so we had to leave
the window open to get some air circulation and that allowed mosquitoes and
other pests into the unit.
When we went to the cafe we where given a 15% discount as a "guest" however the
service and quality of the food leaves much to be desired. The waitress was more
interested in her upcoming vacation to Las Vegas than been cordial with the
clients. When taking our order she lacked any grace or sense of decency when
serving food to people. The prices for the food is comparable to a 4 star hotel
however the quality of food was tasteless and lacked any inspiration.
One would think that to have a location on Government Street so close to Emily
Carr's residence the powers that be would ensure that any and all hospitality
service providers would meet a minimum level of standards. You are better served
to spend $20 more and stay at a real hotel downtown where there is standard of
service. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy.
