To enter the lobby of the hotel and see this huge
panoramic view of the Bay is just breathtaking! You
actually walk down a few stairs to a grand terrace with
view on the bay, and from there easily walk to downtown
Victoria. I wouldn't call it luxurious, but very
elegant, both rustic and modern.
The room was somewhat on the ordinary side, but the bed
was very comfortable. The hotel staff was very friendly
and the concierge even kindly took the time to help me
with my checkout when he saw I was waiting in line at
the Guest desk, which is great.
Service at the restaurant was subpar, but the food
excellent (we had Sunday brunch).
A bit expensive, but overall no disappointment at all!

The bathtub was kind of plugged, water did not really
drain properly. The room is kind of small and our view
was facing the inside of the hotel. This is probably the
entry level room charged at $170.
The pole of the restaurant dining area had some snort
smear on it.... I think that is kind of disgusting. We
stayed there for 1 lunch and that is it. I had to agree
though the food quality was very good. Just the place is
not so clean whether it is the room / restaurant.
I wished I knew Victoria places better before booking
this hotel. This hotel is definitely not Clipper
friendly / close to downtown. It is true that that it is
within walking distance to downtown / Clipper terminal
but I would say a good 25 min walk is needed from the
ferry terminal to get to the hotel while other hotels
are more like within 10 min walk.
They do have a shuttle but out of 3 shuttles requests,
only 1 turned out good. For the 1st one, we had to wait
25 min in the ferry terminal before it showed up. The
2nd shuttle service was great. We put in the request and
within 5 min a shuttle showed up and took us to some
downtown area. The 3rd shuttle service was no good. The
hotel person told us there is some parade in some street
so we had to take our luggage's from hotel to ferry
terminal by ourselves. As we walked our way to the
Clipper Terminal, I don't think any of the street was
blocked. That was a heavy duty 25 min walk with
luggage's hauling behind our back.

I booked the Delta for a little getaway with my son to
celebrate how brave he's being through some very
difficult medical stuff. I booked a premier harbour view
room with two queen beds. It was wonderful to spend the
time with him away from hospitals etc., but the hotel
itself was just a so-so experience.
First the positives:
- Check-in was great - fast and friendly. There was a
cute welcome kit for kids with a little chess set, a
toy, and a glow stick. My son loved it.
- The view of the parliament building all lit up was
really amazing.
- In room movies worked great; room service was
competent and on time.
- The restaurant was nice. Not spectacular, but good
enough and really flexible with allergies and dietary
restrictions.
- The beds were comfortable, and the blackout blinds
were excellent.
- the windows opened easily for fresh air.
The negatives:
- The bathroom wasn't in the best shape. The toilet was
a reluctant flusher. Draining the tub was tricky: I had
to pump the lever while prying the drain open with my
finger nails. (Yuck!)
- Cleanliness was so-so. At one point, my son called out
from the bath: "Mommy! Look! You can get all sorts of
weird goop to come out of the tap!." Went to look and it
was true. Cleaning was only superficial. Ick!!!
- Mixed service. The front desk was great in general,
but housekeeping was surly. At one point I called down
to get a kid-sized robe for my son (my son saw that
other kids in the pool had them) and the woman who came
up was quite unfriendly. If I didn't know better, I'd
say she rolled her eyes at me. They didn't replace the
shampoo and conditioner we had used up, and when I
called down for more I got more unfriendly service from
housekeeping (but polite and responsive service from
reception.)
- Pool maintenance. When we left the pool the second
evening, there were some balled up towels, some cups,
and an apple core on the floor. When we came back again
around lunch time the next day, they were still there.
Ewww!!!
- Overcharging. The restaurant was on-and-off with
remembering their 'kids eat half price' policy. But the
worst was being charged $50 per night more than the rate
I was quoted when I booked. When I asked that the
overcharging be rectified, the response was "I am not
authorized to make rate adjustments."
So, bottom line: I wouldn't stay at the Delta again.
With some maintenance and better cleaning it could be
really nice - providing they charged what they said they
would.

We stayed at the Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe for just
one night in June as part of our 2 week trip to the
Pacific Northwest from the UK.
I pre-booked a harbour view room as I reckoned it would
be a nice one-off treat, and it was really worth it. The
hotel is situated in a perfect position on the opposite
side of the harbour to the Old Parliament Buildings, so
the view from the room was fantastic, and especially
magical at night. No problems at all with the room - a
double king, very spacious, nicely decorated.
Worth staying in for was the hotel restaurant, Lure -
excellent fine dining with great views but not
pretentious, and even had a children's menu for our 9
year old son. Starters were excellent, the duck confit
and chevre tart superb. Main course equally impressive,
lovely chicken breast with ginger and parsnip puree.
Meal rounded off with signature goats cheese creme
brulee cheesecake, plus samplers of 3 Okanagan dessert
wines.
Victoria is such a charming place, we really liked the
compact centre with plenty going on, and Fisherman's
Wharf was great for lunch and feeding the seals. Would
not hesitate to return to the Delta Ocean Pointe if we
get the chance to return.

So this place does have great views from the lobby, the
common areas are beautiful, the gym and pool are quite
nice...but the rooms are -- as others have previously
noted --pretty bad. First I was given a room that reeked
of smoke. Then I was given a room that reeked of sweat.
The third room was fine -- but it was quite dated and
the TV was circa 1982. The bed was clean and comfortable
and the staff was apologetic about the smells ("It's an
issue" the desk girl admitted to me)...so it wasn't a
totally horrific experience. But the rooms certainly
weren't four star...and I've learned my lesson. Next
time: Magnolia. |
