Hotel Review of the Compass Point Inn Surrey
24 September 2011
Decided to take a chance and stay a night based on reviews and the web site. The
staff and lobby are great. The room was a disappointment however. The bed was
old and very uncomfortable and the bedding consisted of a thin cover and one
thin blanket. The noise from the road was tremendous and the room smelled like
it may have formerly been a cigar shop.

We picked this hotel due to its proximity to the skytrain. We are prairie folk
and we were not interested in driving towards Vancouver any further. The rooms
were all booked; yet we were able to book the Honeymoon suite for an extra $30 a
night.
I cannot speak for the regular rooms; yet the the honeymoon suite was nice. It
was clean and quite large in size. He ate in the hotel restaurant the next
morning and we were treated to a Haida Breakfast (eggs benedict with smoked
salmon. Very delicious!
For those wanting to see Downtown Vancouver, the sky train is $9.00 for a day
pass and the station is a 2-3 min walk from the hotel. You can reach the
downtown waterfront in 42 mins. The pass is god for buses and seabus as well.

Was in town for a few days for work and had to stay here because of the
proximity to the skytrain. The hotel itself is very dated, and this is evident
right from the time you pull up to this square, featureless brown building. It
did nicely compliment the low income housing project across the street though
(the occupants of which can be found each morning mulling outside of the dingy
bar, like zombies waiting til it opens)
Once inside, the friendly staff will great you and try to distract you from the
homeless man napping on the driftwood furniture (try not to wake him up though,
hes not a morning person)
In all seriousness though, the staff here are 100% the highlight, they rise
above their less than stellar surroundings and do their best to apologies for
things like the "kitchenette" which consists of an old microwave and some
instant coffee packs (do ask for cups and stir sticks upon checkin though, these
are considered extras)
Noise from the busy street out front is a slight problem if you intend on
sleeping during your stay, but you can spend part of those sleepless nights
wandering the cement labyrinth in the basement, trying to find the pool.
Honestly, i think the tunnels were used during prohibition to smuggle booze into
the bar, and the pool was just an afterthought.
All in all, a mediocre motel with some questionable design choices (i suppose you
can only do so much with art bought at garage sales though) bland, 80s styled
rooms with a wide array of noises at all hours, and some adventurous moments
wondering if you will be stabbed in the parking lot. Great staff, and the husky
guy in the liquor store is always good for a laugh (funny guy)
Stay if you have to, but be ready not to be impressed

As you read the reviews you notice most, if not all, refer to how wonderful
front desk staff was. It's all true and then some. Jackie, who was there for
most of our stay, was amazing. Helpful, friendly, professional are just three
ways to describe her. Everyone else was great as well. Everyone greeted us with
a smile. Although we didn't use it the Skytrain is right across the street. We
had easy access from the hotel to everywhere we drove to. It is a bit of an
older property, but not enough to keep me from staying there again.

We stayed at for 6 nights and it exceeded my expectations! Very good location,
just a short walk, a few minutes to the sky train station which takes you right
to the centre of Vancouver. The rooms were comfortable and clean.
Enjoyed a tasty meal in the restaurant and was well taken care of by the staff.
