Right from being picked up at the airport through to check out, every employee I
have dealings with are truly Ambassadors for the Delta chain. Always personally
welcomed by name, check in is never longer than 2 minutes and your key is
already made up and waiting for you. The employees make you feel at home and
make my life on the road a little easier. The rooms are nice and clean and I
always get such great sleeps there. The in room internet is very fast and as
well there is complimentary wireless in the well appointed lobby/meeting area.
Their airport shuttle service is on a strict 20 minute schedule and the drivers
are all friendly and drive safely. The concierges are very courteous and
extremely helpful. Check out runs without a hitch and its back to the airport.
The breakfast menu is ample as is the smorg if you chose that. Pier 73, the
attached restaurant also has a fine selection of meals to chose from. The
servers are again friendly and efficient.
The views from the rooms are spectacular and include include a river, harbor,
and mountains over looking the airport.
My home away from home.

Last week I stayed at the Delta YVR after an extended absence of several years.
My previous experience was not a choice but rather a forced stay, owing to a
mechanical issue with my flight which meant staying overnight in Richmond. I
wasn't impressed. The room was noisy, felt cheap, and desperately needed a
facelift.
I'm pleased to report that after an extensive renovation motivated by the
Olympics, the Delta has upped its game. It doesn't match the nearby Fairmont for
elegance or panache, but then it doesn't charge the same rates either.
First, the positives. The staff that hosted our event were fantastic. They
exhibited a genuine warmth and attentiveness the moment I arrived at the front
desk, and continued to provide outstanding service during my stay. I can't say
enough about the way I was treated, and I would consider another stay here based
on this metric alone.
The entire hotel has been subject to a design makeover, with a walnut and olive
theme applied to the rooms and common areas. I have to admit that this palette
is not quite aligned with my own tastes (it reminds me too much of my 70s youth)
but nevertheless it makes for a trendy and fun experience. My bathroom had
received a very modern treatment with Silestone counter, large tile and well
placed accent lighting and sconces. The premium fixtures worked flawlessly.
The bed, linens and pillows were top notch and matched that of any high end
hotel that I've stayed at. My room was quiet to both guest noise and traffic,
which I found surprising considering the hotel's proximity to the airport. I
slept well and felt refreshed each morning of my two night stay.
One point that I really appreciated was the hotel's commitment to energy
efficiency by way of the use of low flush toilets, low wattage lighting, and
signage in the lobby explaining the hotel's conservation approach.
Unfortunately however there were a couple of things that detracted somewhat from
an otherwise excellent experience.
My room didn't come with a safe or a fridge which is standard in most hotels,
and seemed inconsistent with the hotel's premium feel. There's no in-room wifi
which I found hard to explain considering the recent upgrade. And whatever
cleaning agents the hotel has chosen to use left my room smelling a little like
damp socks.
Despite the recent renovation, the windows were very draughty and my room was
cold even with the central heating running full tilt. It's evident that
notwithstanding the Delta's conservation ethic, they stopped short of making the
substantial leap to upgrade the windows to high E glass. This might not be a
problem during the better part of the year, but in December it was so
problematic that even the lobby had to use several space heaters to counteract
the building's inherent inefficiency.
In summary, I would likely stay at the Delta again if I needed a reasonably
priced hotel near the airport. It doesn't have the benefit of being within
walking distance of the Canada Line, but the shuttle service runs about every 20
minutes and it's a short jaunt to YVR. The quality of my stay was certainly
influenced by the service here and the rooms present very good value. |
