I searched for a 3-star hotel in Richmond, BC on Hotwire. This hotel was listed for $99/night. After the reservation is done, i learned the hotel name is Comfort Inn! After reading the posted reviews on this site, i was horrified...

Well, I am happy to report that the hotel is not as horrible as most reviews (before the hotel renovation) suggest. The staff is very helpful. Rooms are clean. But the amenity qualifies for 2-start at most!

We stayed from July 20 to July 23. The hotel obviously went though some renovation recently. The room/furniture/bedding looked OK and clean. The carpet look cheap. We stayed on the 4th floor, I can feel the floor vibrate when kids jump or someone walks heavily. Even with some traffic outside, you can see the water in the cup moves... The hallway carpet is not flat in some spots, the elevator is the smallest i have ever seen in a hotel. One room I reserved had some unpleasant smell, probably due to new carpet or paint.

The front desk staff was very helpful, however. We asked to change two rooms due to smell/vibration, they are happy to do it. My brother got wood splinter in his finger, they provided needle and anti-biotic alcohol to use.

There is enough parking space. No free breakfast is served.

Overall, i think the place is OK as a 2-star hotel.

We spent 2 nights before our AK cruise. The hotel has dark carpet and walls, walking to the room reminded me of entering a cave. We had a "remodeled" room with a new a/c and remote.

Part of the old wall paper in the bathroom was visible where the vanity ends and the floor molding did not extend all the way to the tub.

The bathtub does not have a safety bar or anything that extends for gripping. It's narrow and the sides curve inward so standing becomes treacherous when soap meets the soft water. The tub is very slippery, not treated for non stick and with nothing to hang on to... this is an accident waiting to happen. We asked for more hand towels and kept putting it in the tub to stand on during our showers.

The shower curtain is the shortest one I have ever seen. I think a couple of inches longer and wider would have kept the water in the tub better.

I feel this room wasn't ready for guests and hope they'll fix the bathtub floor and put on the hand rail since a lot of seniors stay here before their cruise.

The hotel restaurant is open during limited hours but we walked to the restaurant a block away after we heard people complaining about waiting so long for their food.

The pool was clean, plenty of chairs and no plane noise inside our room.

Stayed two nights, one at the start of my trip, and one at the end, since it was close to the airport.

Staff was helpful. Free wireless internet. Wired access would have been nice since I forgot my wireless card.

Continental breakfast was ok, and it was a pleasant enough eating room.

One inconvenience was ice for the ice bucket, had to go downstairs, and the layout of the hotel can be a little confusing, resulting in some hunting around.

Liquor store attached. Enterprise car rental a minute or two walk away. Other things are a little less convenient of a walk, especially arriving late at night once most places are closed. Pick up something to eat at the airport before leaving.

I stayed at this hotel April 24-28,'08. I had not read the comments posted here until AFTER I had made my reservation, so it was with a lot of trepidation that I traveled there. It was, however, too late to find reasonable rates in area hotels and I didn't want to miss my professional convention. Well, I'm glad to report that my experience differed greatly from the negative ones posted about here. My room was very clean, the front desk staff very friendly, the cleaning crew friendly and polite, though a bit hard to understand, and the breakfast provided is very acceptable: a variety of juices, 3 different kinds of cereal to choose from, yogurt, fruit, toast, coffee and tea. My only complaint in this area: all plates and cups are Styrofoam. All utensils plastic. So if you, like me, do not like the idea of eating bits of the stuff as you scrape the bottom of the bowl for the last of the cereal, bring your own bowl. The place is, indeed, older, but they are working hard to make improvements. No, there's no restaurant (which is undergoing remodeling). However, a nice little Italian restaurant is across the road - the Italian Tomato, as are Starbucks, Subway, and, soon to come, Burger King. If you don't mind walking 1/4 to 1/2 a mile, walk down No. 3 Road and you will find more Chinese restaurants than you could eat in in a lifetime. There's also a "country kitchen" place of sorts, if you must have your bacon and potatoes etc. If you choose to go a little further, the number 98B bus stops in front of the hotel and will take you down No. 3 Road towards Richmond Center and all along the road you will find tens upon tens upon tens of Asian food places. You will not go hungry. Alternatively, you can go into one of the supermarkets along No.3 Road and buy your own fruit, crackers, etc. Beware the beer/wine store adjacent to the hotel, though. A six pack cost me 13.00. Bring your own beer!
But back to the hotel: there's a bit of dust, as the place is undergoing changes, and there's a smell of paint in the air, of course. I left my window open. No problem. The bathroom was very clean, they provided me with extra stuff I asked for (blankets and towels, when I flooded the bathroom), shower is excellent, the WIFI works great, and the bed was very comfortable. All for 88 bucks Canadian.

My only issue (and it's really a non-issue): family called and left me a message on the phone; there were no directions on how to retrieve it; I called the front desk and the young man was not sure how to do it either and in the process, I lost my message, which, in the end was fine. I did suggest a refresher on how to teach your guests how to retrieve their messages, though.

Additional bonus: if you come up, as I did, on the train from Seattle, you can catch the Skytrain to the Burrard Station, hop on the 98B and you will be at the hotel in 25 minutes, no cabs needed.

Thank you for reading.

i traveled by myself to australia and staied over night at the comfort yvr. the front desk was extremely helpful ...they were understaff but the check-in process was just done in a min and printed out my boarding pass for me too. i also asked where to have dinner and they suggested a chinese restaurant close by...it only costed me $7 for a noodle soup, drink & dessert. the room was neat n' modern...i loved the mattress....front desk told me my room was newly renovated and i guess is a pretty old property since it has only 1 elevator. the chef who serve the continental breakfast was friendly...will stay again
