This hotel is the real thing. Very authentic experience staying here.
The staff were wonderful and I just didn't want to leave at the end of
my trip.
The location is perfect close to downtown, but right at the shore of
English Bay (stunning views!) and Stanley Park.
I'll make a point to stay here every time I'm in Vancouver. I highly
recommend it!

Sylvia Hotel “Not the newest or trendiest spot, but arguably the best
for sunset viewing.”—Constance Brissenden, author, DK Top 10 Vancouver &
Victoria and Vancouver, A Pictorial Celebration. Right alongside English
Bay; 120 rooms and suites in a range of prices; frequent renovations
make this oldie an inexpensive goodie; sip a martini and watch the
sunset from the hotel bar/lounge. 1154 Gilford StreetGuest Review of the Sylvia Hotel in Vancouver

Third time at the hotel. From December 26-2009 to January 13-2010. We
stayed at a large suite (2 bedrooms, 2 baths, 1 living room and a
kitchen.
No surprises. Good service (rooms could be made a little earlier) and
verynice and very helpful front desk people. You cannot come to this
place and not talk about the wonderful bar and restaurant with large
glass windows facing English Bay.
Are we going back to the Sylvia? Of course. Every time we go to
Vancouver.

If you are expecting a standard corporate hotel you may be disappointed
- a colleague booked at the Sylvia and took one look at the room and
left. The corridors in particular look a bit run down but my room on the
3rd floor was clean, bed comfortable and it was quiet. The location is
great - a stone's throw from English Bay and close to Stanley Park. As
long as you get past the fact it isn't a Holiday Inn there's much to
commend it

I have stayed many times at Sylvia Hotel, this time we wanted to train
up from Seattle before the Olympic Games, so we were fortunate to
finally be able to rent a fully furnished suite, room 622 with kitchen
and all five windows overlooking the Pacific.
To the right, 150 meters, Stanley Park, to the left, Davie street and
easy walk to downtown or the trail along the shore to catch a mini
Seabus to Granville Island.
A very affordable and welcoming hotel.

Adjacent to Stanley Park, the ivy-covered Sylvia Hotel was built in 1912
as an apartment building and today is a local landmark. Its bar was
Vancouver’s first cocktail lounge when it opened in 1954 and today is
still a top spot to grab a drink next to the fireplace. Located outside
of downtown on English Bay Beach, near jogging trails and other outdoor
amenities, the Sylvia’s in a quieter spot, yet still 15 minutes from
downtown. Like many other Vancouver hotels, the Sylvia’s 120 rooms and
suites are pet friendly—in fact, the hotel was the first to start the
trend in Vancouver.

The Sylvia Hotel 1154 Gilford Street over on English Bay next to Stanley Park.
Stately and solid, its eight floors draped in thick ivy, the 97-year-old Sylvia
is restrained, with prices to match. The long, skinny, one-windowed,
mysteriously popular “nun’s room” is 65 dollars a night in low season, while the
other rooms — with conservative décor but wide windows — are generally 110
dollars and up.
But for that slightly higher expenditure, you get peace and quiet, proximity to
the beach and a few neat architectural details, like marble stairways and
stained-glass entryways. Fans of the children’s book “Mister Got to Go: The Cat
That Wouldn’t Leave,” by Lois Simmie, will probably love seeing the hotel that
the book’s eponymous feline made his home.
And, said Dana Moores, the hotel’s front-office manager, “They say Erroll Flynn
died here.” Whether that’s true or not, the Sylvia’s 120 rooms don’t seem like a
bad place to spend your final days. Your heirs, at least, will appreciate your
frugality.

This is an older brick hotel with GREAT charm. Elevators are small but working
and fast. VERY pet friendly with many people bringing their best friends over
the Christmas holiday. Staff is friendly and helpful. We hope to go back to this
one again. It's walking distance to Stanley Park (southwest end) and is just
across the street from the beach walkway. FINE restaurants are close by --
Raincity Grill -- 1 block (reservations recommended). Also, if you're booking
over the holidays and want to eat IN the hotel restaurant at any time, MAKE
RESERVATIONS. That was one thing we cannot comment on, because we didn't get in
for the brunch. We had a kitchenette suite which was really well stocked with
equipment.

I have been staying in the Sylvia for 30 years now. I suppose that slants my
review a bit. Yes, it can be a little funky, but the staff and the location (in
my humble opinion) more than make up for it. Yes it needs a bit of paint. Yes
things are a bit nicked here and there. But in terms of staff friendliness and
location it is unbeatable. ...and as a plus (for some of us at least) it has a
truly remarkable selection of scotch whiskeys in the bar!

It's not modern hotel as everyone may see in Vancouver. It's old, but with
spirit inside! You cant expect that rooms will be wonderful and cant expect
sauna, swimming pool and similar facilities which are in standard hotels. People
selects this hotel for its amazing location, so if you wanna explore
surroundings choose this hotel and you won't be sorry.

We spoke to the front desk about the mattress being uncomfortably soft- they
offered to move us and then surprised us with a brand new mattress THAT DAY.
Friendly, fun old hotel, perfect location.
Rent bikes from the place recommended at the front desk- they have discount
coupons. We biked to Granville island and it was fabulous.
