Review of the Sylvia Hotel in Vancouver

The Sylvia is perfect if you're looking to stay downtown on a budget,
without staying in a dive. It's got a great view and not a bad location.
The hotel is old, in the cute heritage sense of the word (not the ugly
circa-1950 kind of the way) so the room we were in was a little on the
cool side. But, it makes up in charm what it lacks in amenities. The
restaurant was disappointing for dinner, but not bad for breakfast - it
has a great view overlooking English Bay. When we're not travelling on
business, this is where we'll be staying from now on.

If you enjoy paying over the odds for a small room in a 'boutique'
hotel, then the Sylvia isn't for you. Yes, it's slightly old-fashioned,
but that's the charm of the place. The bathrooms don't have the latest
fittings, but are clean and a decent size. The last time we stayed here,
we found we had been given a suite: a good size bedroom, a bathroom, a
sitting room with a dining table and chairs and a sofa that folded open
into a bed and, off it, a kitchen with a full-size cooker and fridge.
Even if you only used it to make yourself breakfast, this would be worth
having. As for the location: ideal for walking to the shops in Denman
Street or to Stanley Park. A little ferry to Granville Island is a
ten-minute walk away.
Room Tip: Try and get a room on the front, overlooking English Bay, on
the third floor or higher. It's worth paying extra for

My husband and I stayed in the Sylvia Hotel before and we were not
disappointed this time. When we arrived we were greeted by a friendly
staff. I had changed our original reservation but everything was in
order when we arrived. Our room was spacious and the bed was fine. This
is an older hotel but for us that gives it something extra. I don't know
if there are rooms with a coffee machine and a fridge but ours didn't.
It would have been nice to be able to make a cup of tea or coffee.
The hotel is situated on a great spot near English Bay and Denman
Street. We like the fact that we can leave our car in the garage and
explore the city by foot.
The food in the hotel is great but if you want to eat out there are a
lot of restaurants nearby.
When we return to Vancouver we will certainly stay in the Sylvia!

Used to be a great hotel; now terribly run down. Wonderful location on
English Bay but that is all it has going for it. Stayed four nights and
after the first night let the front desk know that the shower worked
like it had prostate issues. Nothing was done. For after dark
entertainment you can watch the rats run up and down the ivy that covers
the front of the hotel. Upon reading this review if you still decide to
stay at the Sylvia, keep your windows closed at night or you could wind
up sharing your room with the rats. Could not find another place to stay
or would have changed hotels after the first night. Would rate this
hotel as 'terrible' but the staff is nice and helpful but that doesn't
make up for the mess this once great landmark has become.

This hotel was recommended by a friend and it was the highlight of our
trip to Vancouver. Located right outside Stanley park and on the English
Bay, you cannot beat the location. The hotel is old but kept up- very
European. The staff went above and beyond and we cannot wait to visit
again. Thanks from Minnesota!

beautiful spot in the west end, so convenient to activities in English
Bay area and downtown, great for the summer fireworks competition as
well. |
