Review of the Sandman Hotel Downtown Vancouver
5 February 2012
I stayed at the Sandman Hotel Vancouver City Center for two nights in mid January 2012. I removed all my belongings from my car and stored the GPS in the glovebox before parking my car in the underground paid parking lot with security and limited entry. When I checked out of the hotel and got to my car, I found my car to be damaged. Somebody had broken into my car through the driver's side window (smashed to pieces) and stolen the GPS from the glove box. I came upstairs and told the hotel about the incident. Front desk told me that such incidents are rare in the area and in the hotel. I later find out from people working in the parking lot and nearby area that such incidents occur about once a week in the hotel!!! Furthermore, the manager told me that the cameras were not functioning when I had my car parked and the hotel is not liable for the damage to my car despite the secured parking lot. His words "security is for honest people and doesn't stop the vagrants from breaking into vehicles." Total car damage > $2000, which my car insurance company is partly paying. Hotel wouldn't cover part of my bill or provide a voucher so that I can get over this terrible experience.

The hotel staff, room, check in and check out, and pool area were just fine. There were a few inconveniences such as fuzzy cable, no "do not disturb" door hanger, slow elevators and dirty windows. For the money, it was a perfectly fine hotel with a great location, and the water pressure in the shower was great. The Shark Club wasn’t as hot as its website totes. The food was yummy, albeit expensive, and it was completely dead on a Saturday night, so in the future I’ll plan to have cocktails somewhere else

The Sandman hotel is getting on a bit, late 70's design that needs some new paint here and there. But a good location next to stadium, near Chinatown and go for a good breakfast to Medina Cafe on Beatty Street nearby (see separate review). Efficient hotel with parking and no frills service. Two good bars. It works, value for money.

I stayed at the Sandman City Centre for approximately 50 days in October and November and the stay was very comfortable. The staff treats you very well and responds quickly to any needs. The restaurant and bar staff are personable, efficient and friendly. The close proximity to all downtown areas make this a great hotel location. I would certainly come back and recommend this hotel to business travellers on long term stays in Vancouver.
