Great location for shopping, food, and parks. The hotel staff was friendly and
helpful. We enjoyed the free bikes and used them for a ride around Stanley park.

This was my fifth trip to Vancouver, first time at the Opus. I'd stay there
again in a heartbeat. It was a special birthday for me, so I spent a bit more
than I usually do for my two nights there. When I arrived, they upgraded my room
to a king-size bed, plus it was on the third floor with a door to an interior,
tree-filled terrace, the only room like that. A generous and classy touch. While
I didn't have time to use the terrace, the light and scenery were great. The
room was nice-sized, tasteful decor, and the bed and bedding were
super-comfortable. I love it when there are plenty of plugs to recharge cells
and the like, too. The bathroom had a separate shower, and the vanity had plenty
of space to place accessories.
The staff was super-courteous, and I, like another reviewer, got courtesy
cupcakes to mark my birthday (no champagne, though!). Breakfast was very
good--due to a changeover in their pop-up restaurant, they were offering
complimentary continental breakfast in the lobby, but TripAdvisor offered a free
regular breakfast as part of the deal, so I ate a full breakfast of Scottish
oatmeal and brioche french toast, very well made.
The overall impression was of a chic and "cool" hotel, but one that doesn't act
the part, meaning very warm, welcoming, unpretentious and helpful. It's right
across from the Canada Line subway to the airport, which saves both time and
money--it took me thirty minutes from leaving the hotel to entering the airport,
at 5:30 am. And Yaletown is very convenient to downtown and to Granville Island,
among other places.
The Opus is a hotel that completely merits its fine reputation. I will stay
there again next time.

Opus is a high-end boutique hotel frequented by notables from the fashion and
film industries and youngish professionals in-the-know. It looks like something
our of Wallpaper magazine: ultra-trendy, understated-modern punctuated with
vibrant colours and a hip vibe.
My room was spacious with a glorious soaking tub and a walk-in shower. The
king-sized bed gave me the chance to try the TempurPedic mattress (sheer
indulgence and a great night's sleep). All the amenities are high-end: the
l'Occitane toiletries, larger bottles of liquor on the desk, the softest
bathrobe ever. Yet for me the most important part of the room was the feeling I
got as I entered after a hectic day of sightseeing: It was tranquil and I
welcomed the feeling of privacy and quiet. I could get used to this.
When I returned to my room at night, there was little card at my bedside that
told me what tomorrow's weather would bring, along with a carafe of water. Where
else would nightly turn down service come with an all-day sucker one night and a
string of fizzy candy the next, instead of the ubiquitous chocolate?
That told me that I was staying in a place that takes its service, rather than
itself, seriously. And that really made a difference, because I'm so far off the
fashion/trendy grid that it's a non-fashion statement in itself. So I was
worried that I'd be treated to pretentious staff looking me over and making me
feel like I didn't belong.
Instead I was spoiled at and by Opus - starting with informed, cheerful and
courteous staff and running the gamut.
The David-Bowie-does-Andy-Warhol decor of the restaurant (complete with silver
walls, sprayed-on graphics, crystal chandeliers and disco balls) was so retro is
took me back to my grad school days in NYC. Breakfasts there are really worth
it: lavender-honey yogurt, chunks of fresh fruit, and thick, toothsome
multi-grained toast really got my attention.
And it couldn't be more convenient: a few blocks walk to the pier to catch the
Aquabus fro Granville Island market, walking distance to almost anything I
wanted to see, and just kitty corner from the Yaletown-Roundhouse stop of the
Canada Line to the airport.
So you think I liked Opus? I LOVED it! |
