Sandman Hotel Downtown Vancouver

Guest Review of the Sandman Hotel Downtown Vancouver
19 October 2011
At the end of a fly drive 16 day holiday from Calgary we decided to stay for extra nights in Vancouver. Sandman Hotel provided basic requirements to a standard you would expect. When booking in at first we were allocated an small room. This was a mistake by the booking in-person. After a debate (should we make a fuss etc) decided to complain and had the wind taken out of our sails when the (different) booking-in lady moved us to an excellent room with mountain views without any problems. The location was fine for access to downtown but hotel is on a main road so noise was a problem as was the music from the bar. Apart from that all was OK. Free WiFi. Pay for parking.

A pretty standard room with an uninspiring view. Great location if you are going to the sports events or theatres. Good customer service from staff on front desk. Lift access to all floors. Good pool and on site restaurant (which is a bit pricey but saves you getting into Gastown).

After reading some poor reviews I was pleasantly surprised by the appearance of this downtown hotel. The lobby and public areas are very nice. The rooms are small, but fine for overnight. Our room in the north tower had a redecorated bathroom, but the sink area had no place to leave your toiletries and no place to hang towels. The onsite restaurant looked to be very expensive. We walked a few blocks and found some less expensive food. The hotel was a short taxi ride to the Port of Vancouver where we set sail on a cruise to Alaska.

When checked in late in the evening there were 3 receptionists, they were busy looked at their computers and it took few minutes until one of them finally greeted us. No bell boy. Room was not equipped with a hair dyer, when asked for one, it took a day to deliver it to our room so we have to borrow from the room next door when the room was being cleaned. Used glasses was left uncleaned. The receptionist was unfriendly when answer questions.

The newly renovated Sandman is good value for the reasonable price for a hotel downtown Vancouver. We were happy to see a nice bar fridge in the room to keep our water and juices, oh okay, and a few beer. beds were good, linens nice and not too noisy on the north side of the hotel. Great for walking to any show in the Queen E, Rogers arena or Orpheum.
