The warmth of hotel staff on arrival by door, bell and front desk staff
were followed by courteous and caring service from concierge,
housekeeping, and restaurant personnel. As we arrived early, our luggage
was placed in complimentary storage awaiting a room being ready. We were
then given bottled water for sightseeing.
Situated near name brand stores and specialty shops on Robson St., we
found diverse restaurants in the area. Hop on and off circuit buses stop
at this hotel as they cover the entire city including Stanley Park and a
free shuttle to the Capilano Suspension Bridge.
A waterfall shower from ceiling above tub was refreshing. An in room
refrigerator was helpful. The self-service coffee was delicious and
appreciated. 31st floor rooms facing South were scenic at sunset, but
curtains had to be closed to avoid the room being heated by the sun.
When at 6 PM our AC was not maintaining a desired temperature, a call to
the front desk resulted in the prompt appearance of courteous and
competent technician who quickly diagnosed the problem and made the fix
while we went to dinner. Upon our return, we found our room as cold as
we had wished.
Upon departure, bell service arranged a van cab for all our extra
luggage from our 2+ weeks of touring and cruising from Alaska. Our
driver performed as a tour guide during the drive to the airport.

This hotel puts itself out in the market as upscale but they have a lot
to learn about customer service. Promised a king bed room - only to
arrive and find we had a double bed. They have valet parking / self
parking with in & out service / or just daily underground parking
choices. They haven't figured out how to actually get a person and their
car in and out of the parking lot when they have paid top dollar for the
in and out service. The room keys stop opening your room door without
warning - prompting a trip to the lobby and a long wait in line at the
desk for a new key. The in house restaurant should be avoided by anyone
who wants any sort of service.
None of the staff have any idea what ingredients are in the different
items and tell you what they think you might want to hear - no concerns
about people getting ill because they ate something they shouldn't. They
advertise fresh squeezed orange juice that come straight out of a
Tropicane bottle. Poached eggs arrive at the table very cold. Waiters
reek of second hand smoke when they lean over to fill your coffee cups.
All of this at very high prices!

Any hotel with a Starbucks in the lobby gets high marks. Four blocks
from the cruise terminal, close to many downtown restaurants and
shopping. Gastown is only 2 blocks away. Our one night stay was perfect.
We obtained a very competitive rate for a Thursday night mid-September
stay. We will return to the Hyatt on our next Vancouver visit.

Our 15th-storey balcony room overlooked the Fairmont Vancouver, but in
no way were we envious not to be staying there. The Hyatt is perfectly
situated, literally adjacent to Burrard Skytrain station, and a block
away from Sears and the Vancouver Art Gallery. The room was generously
sized (our bathroom was particularly large for the city centre) with
huge King Size bed, decent TV (although poor choice of channels) and
pretty good coffee (for a change).
If I had to be critical, the entrance does not give much of a sense of
occasion – there’s no real ‘lobby’ as such, just a Starbucks and a
thoroughfare to a shopping arcade - and the walls between bedrooms are a
little thin (in our case perhaps due to having a (locked) adjoining door
into the next room). Also the lifts could be really slow in coming (very
fast in taking you between floors though) although this is hardly to be
unexpected in such a tall tower.
On the whole, however, it’s first rate. I’ve stayed at the Sandman near
Chinatown before and, for a little more change, the Hyatt is infinitely
better. The pool and hot tubs are dramatically located under the city’s
towers and great places to enjoy some peace after a busy day. Just a
great city centre hotel. |
