Guest Reviews of the Howard Johnson Hotel Vancouver Downtown

Upon arriving at the front desk, we were greeted by someone who could
barely speak/understand English. After asking for someone who better
spoke my language, the front desk agent immediately noticed that I was
travelling with a pet. She told me that their central reservations
people had failed to let them know that I was travelling with a pet. She
became upset and told me that pets were allowed, but that the "pet
friendly" rooms here not that nice. I was shocked to hear a hotel staff
member tell me that their hotel rooms were not that nice. However, our
pet was with us, so we have no choice.
Upon arriving in the room, the room appeared to be super old, and was
super tiny! The room smelled like dog urine, with several stains on the
carpet. We felt like second-class customers, just because we had a dog
with us!
This hotel was super expensive, plus they charged $25 per pet per night,
in addition to holding a $250 retainer fee that they told me was because
we had a small dog with us. They did give me back the $250 following
them actually inspecting the room.
Around the hotel was a lot of restaurants, grills, cafes and other
eatery's. This hotel is located only 3 minutes from Canada Place and
waterfront in Downtown, Vancouver!

This hotel has a very helpful and trust-worthy staff. I travel to
Vancouver on business quite frequently and this is always my hotel of
choice. The office suite rooms are cozy, equipped with all the
necessities and internet access.
The general manager Lucia Baranova is absolutely exceptional at her job
and always makes my stay very pleasant and easy to organize.
Highly recommended!

I was lucky enough to get a last minute room at the Howard Johnson, two
weeks ago. The manager, Lucia Baronova was pleasant, professional and
immediately helpful. I had to travel from the states with my son who is
8 months old, and she made sure that the room was ready for us and her
supporting staff was courteous and assisted me with any requests that
can happen last minute when traveling with an infant. Moms know,
anything can down and sometimes, we just don't have enough hands. They
were able to keep the stroller when I needed to run back to my room, and
I knew it was safe and in good care. The room was fantastic. It was
clean, the colors were bright and cheerful, and the bed was so
comfortable. I was able to take care of business without leaving my
room, as I had access to my own personal fax machine, a coffee maker
with coffee provided and snacks. It meant any business I needed to do,
which was the purpose of my trip, I was able to execute without any
issues.
I would go back any day. Their rates are competitive and the staff is
incredible. I can't say enough about the manager, Lucia. She goes above
and beyond to make a guest feel welcome. She's a major asset to their
company.
Thank you for a wonderful experience, I will recommend the hotel to
everyone I can and I will be back.

This hotel is all about the downtown location.
Booked for 6 nights at an average rate of $139, room was way too small
for two guys in two double beds, bathroom was tiny.
On a positive note, $20/day parking which is a decent price.

The room was cozy but basic. Aside from the TV with basic cable and
pay-per-view, there was not much reason to stay in the room. My
interaction with the workers was pleasant and the hotel appeared to be
neat and clean. There is a restaurant attached which is nice for lunch,
dinner, or pregame.
The hotel is located in the heart of the Vancouver nightlife, so on
weekend nights the street fills with 20 somethings looking to have a
night out. It's not dangerous because the police are everywhere, but be
forewarned. Another thing to note is the hotel charges $19/day (CAD) for
parking and the entrance to the lot is located down an alley at the end
of the block.
Overall, I felt my stay was a bit over priced; although I recognize that
the bulk of the price is due to the downtown location. I would have been
more satisfied if the hotel offered a something little extra (i.e.
microwave/refrigerator, room service, etc).
