Review of the Sylvia Hotel in Vancouver

The Sylvia Hotel is a wonderful hotel for a family with children on a visit to Vancouver. We stayed in a corner suite with views over English Bay with two toddlers (1yr and 2,5yr old). The suite has a bedroom, a living room and a small kitchen with all amenities. In the living room is a decent table with chairs which gives you the opportunity to arrange meals on your own. Breakfast downstairs was fairly priced and although mainly consisted of egg dishes ok. Although the atmosphere is more for older people, we felt welcome with our little kids.

The location of the Sylvia hotel is awesome. There is a beach in front of the hotel with a large walkway towards Stanley Park but also to the east to Granville Bridge. You are very close to Stanley Park so playgrounds or any other outdoor activity for the kids is close by. For the main shopping areas and sightseeing you need to walk a bit or take a bus but we thought the location made up for it.

Although the furniture and the room were a bit worn out and in need of a renovation, we would definitely come back to this hotel. Where else can you find a decent hotel in downtown Vancouver where the kids can play outside in the park and on the beach?

It is perfectly located by the park and right on the beach. The view is stunning and it is close to downtown by not downtown... so perfect. From the front door to the water is literally 50 yards.

But the place is a ... dump. Terribly unkind but true. The staff are nice and breakfast fine. The rooms are roomy. But everything needs updating. From the doors, to the ceiling to the walls. I think it is mostly clean but it is so old and cracked and ill-fitted that you you never really feel that it is clean. In a perfect world someone would turn it into the ultra trendy hotel with a 80 million dollar reno.
I wish I liked it more.

Generally I would stay at the Sutton Place Hotel in Vancouver but due to a sold out night I was required to make alternative arrangements and until I stumbled upon the Sylvia I was at about 549/night that was available. I did know about the Sylvia but thought it was a boutique compared to a Heritage Hotel and expected it to be quite pricey. To my surprise it was very reasonable below 125/night in downtown Vancouver or more specifically right at English Bay just off Denman. Beautiful location with stunning views from the pub/restaurant. I didn't have a bayside room but the corner room I did stay in was very large with a small private bedroom and 2 queen beds in main room, it was rustic (not sure about the safety of the doorlock system) but very well kept. Really good live music Thursday nights, I think it is a must try.

Hotel dates back to an apartment block of the early 1900s and has an old-fashioned feel, but not in a bad way. Our room, facing towards the sea, was decidedly chilly on arrival as the windows had been left open to air out the room, but the room was very spacious with good facilities. Details such as light fixtures need attention as the hotel's refurbishment continues, but the hotel is a good choice for a short, economical stay in Vancouver -- close to downtown, and at the beginning of a glorious walk (on a fine day) around Stanley Park. Good breakfast in attached restaurant, but real maple syrup a necessity -- not available, but should be, even if at a slight additional cost!

I love the Sylvia. I visited Vancouver during a rainy week, but I didn't care because my stay at the Sylvia was so cosy and warm. With a beautiful view of English Bay, the cosy room I was in felt like it was made for me. (I hope I can stay in it again when I come back to Vancouver for another visit). The service at the hotel is friendly and efficient. If you appreciate the character of an older hotel, the Sylvia can't be beat!

Thank you to all the staff who make our every stay at The Sylvia a memorable one - from the front desk to the restaurant. From the valley we drive in to Vancouver always anticipating the delightful location and the unique character of this old hotel and we are never disappointed. This time we were in the newer part of the hotel and found the bed very comfortable and all the amenities to make for a wonderful stay. Thank you! We will be back.

We have stayed in many of the top rated Vancouver hotels in Coal Harbour and the downtown core, but for this trip we decided to try out the older Slyvia Hotel located right across from English Bay at the entrance to Stanley Park. We were upgraded to a suite overlooking English Bay on the 7th floor and were very pleased with our room. It was spotless and consisted of a bedroom, sitting room, and a small kitchen and bathroom. The views from the room were great and a Starbucks (for morning coffee) was right across the street. We parked the car and walked everywhere... There are several excellent restaurants within one block and you literally cross the street and walk onto the seawall to access Stanley Park. You are a bit far from the downtown core and you would probably have to drive or take the bus to reach the shopping malls, but we weren't there for the shopping, so this didn't matter to us. We had great walks into the park and around Lost Lagoon, beautiful eagles flew right by our hotel window and we enjoyed the view of the ocean beach. A short walk along the sea wall towards the south gets you to the Aquabus dock, where a little water taxi takes you across the water in about 3 minutes to Granville Island, where many shops and restaurants are located. This is also a great place to buy fresh produce and baked goods to take back to your room. The Slyvia Hotel is a heritage building, built in 1912, so it isn't a modern upscale place and it definitely has an older feel, but if you are planning to visit Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium, Granville Island, or the West End of Vancouver, you couldn't ask for a better location. Park you car, walk everywhere, enjoy the view and the nearby restaurants. A perfect place to stay!
