Sandman Hotel Downtown Vancouver

Guest Review of the Sandman Hotel Downtown Vancouver

They use Moxies for room service. The food is great but the service couldn't be worst. They don't know their menu, they forget half the order when they deliver to the room, and they don't know how to answer the phone and take the order properly: when ordering breakfast one day I was on the phone for ten minutes and talked to four people to order just 3 items, as no one knew what the seasonal soup was and different people kept coming back to the phone, they asked for the reservation name twice, one lady was plain rude, and they even got the room number wrong. This was the sloppiest room service answering system I have ever seen and we stay at hotels very often for work functions. Food great, service awful. I find it strange that Moxies doesn't train their employees on how to answer the phone and take an order with care and respect. Worst worst worst phone service ever.

Now the hotel. The reception area is beautiful but the rooms don't look anything like that. The first room they gave us was gray and old looking, the phone didn't work, there was no remote for the tv in the bedroom, no racks for the suitcases, a big living room but not even one coffee table there. They gave us another suite which was better. Quiet and the bed is very comfortable.

But the kitchen didn't have wine glasses, the bathroom is awfully small and the worst design I have ever seen, no place anywhere to put the toiletries, no soap holder in the bathtub, no toilet holder except a portable one that is always in the way in this arleady small bathroom, and they don't leave enough big towels unless we requested more. Not enough hooks for the towels either, we are a family of 3 and there was only one towel hook! On the upside the water pressure in the shower was good. But I had to hold all my make up in my hands as I was applying it as there is no counters around the sink, it's just a box, awful.

Housekeeping is friendly and helpful. However they don't start housekeeping until 12 noon, which is weird. I returned to my suite after shopping for 4 hours at 2 pm and the room wasn't done. I requested it be done because I have a young child that needed a nap. Straight away I had 3 polite housekeepers who did my room very quickly. But really I had expected my room to be done before my return.

The swimming pool and the hot tub are nice. Though after time change no one changed the clocks in the swimming pool or the suites. Had to request an extra rob as they left us only one.

In the overall it was alright, but there are too many small annoyances.

The main thing going for this hotel is the rooms are available at a reasonable rate and it is very well located, right in the centre of Vancouver and close (four blocks) to Vancouver City Centre on the Skytrain. A number of grocery stores are located close by, as well as many other amenities. Budget rent a car is about two blocks away and Pacific Car Rentals are also close by. The rooms are small and would benefit from some better lighting in them, and the rather strange dark decor adds to the impression the place is a bit dingy. But the staff were very friendly and helpful and overall I would recommend this for the price.

This is a large busy standard city hotel. We stayed on the 11th floor in a room overlooking the rear ( and sports stadium) which proved to be very comfortable. The room was air conditioner and a small fridge had been provided. We did not visit the restaurant but opted to use the White Spot family restaurant just a short walk up the road from the hotel.

The only slight complaint being that you can hear people using the corridor, any conversations could be clearly heard in the bedroom.

With regard to the general street area around the hotel we did not have any safety concerns, it was only a short walk to Chinatown.

There are three different city tour bus companies operating from a bus stop directly outside the hotel front door. This provides a great opportunity to undertake a full circuit of the city in order to get your bearings prior to making your own way. Request a room at the rear if there is any hockey or other activity scheduled at the nearby stadium. The crowds pass directly in front of the hotel when an event is held.
