Guest Review of the Holiday Inn Vancouver Centre on Broadway
2 September 2011
I went to this hotel because it was the only one which was offered by
the conference I was attending, and I was apprehensive about it after
reading the negative reviews on this site. It turned out much better
than I expected.
Here were the worries I read about
- construction: It seems like the renovation is almost complete. I saw
no construction, and didn't hear any either, but the pool and fitness
centre were still closed. I was offered access to a nearby gym in
compensation, though.
-location. This hotel is called "Vancouver Centre" not "Vancouver
Downtown". I guess it helps to be familiar with Vancouver geography, but
central is not a synonym for downtown. It was within 3 blocks of where I
had to be, and everything I needed could be found right in the
neighbourhood. Restaurants, coffee shops, 24 hour drug store (I needed
that at 3 in the morning and it's only 1 block away), shoe stores, book
store, craft store (Michael's! on the next block), lots of
outdoor/outfitter-type stores - tons of services on Broadway
-transportation. I arrived at YVR and took the Skytrain to the
Broadway/City Hall station. Very short walk to the hotel and the train
ride is only 20 minutes. There's a train every 6 minutes on that line.
The system is new, and there aren't a lot of lines yet, but it was great
for where I wanted to go.
-new room. The room was lovely and comfortable (see my pics). Only
complaint here was the A/C - the weather was hot and the A/C was noisy.
That said, it's not hot very often in Vancouver, so maybe not a big
problem.
-breakfast. Our conference rate included the buffet breakfast and it's
great. Lot's of fresh fruit, all the usual cold and hot dishes.
My biggest frustration was the wifi connection. I was told it was
available everywhere, but sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. You
have no way of knowing where the router was, so maybe I was in the one
room where it was difficult to reach. The reception staff were
sympathetic to my problems, and sent people to reset the router a couple
times (once that helped, and once it didn't). One day I just gave up and
went across the street to a coffee shop to connect.
I'm not used to the "big city" and I was a little worried about my
personal safety before I went, but I asked advice at the desk before I
went for walks and and they looked at me like "why are you concerned?"
Everyone told me that there was no need for concern. False Creek,
Granville Island, the Olympic Village - lots of scenic places to stroll
around here.
Very much enjoyed my stay.

This was my first time staying here.
The positives:
Nice bar/restaurant on site
Attentive staff
Very nice, clean room
Great location
The negatives:
Concrete on the balcony was filthy and had moss growing on it
Renovation construction started very early in the morning, and it was
noisy before 8:00am
When I reserved this room, I reserved a room with a balcony. When I
checked in, I got to my room and discovered it did NOT have a balcony,
despite balcony rooms being available. The staff got me into a balcony
room in short order, but it never should've been an issue.
The morning construction was another story. Banging on the walls at
7:45am was rather unwelcome. As someone who travels on business, and
does business from his hotel room, I had to contend with the incessant
banging while on the phone.
If I stay here again, I'll call first to find out if there is any
construction and/or renovation going on. If there is, I think I might
choose another hotel. If there's no construction or renovations
happening, I wouldn't hesitate to stay here.

as we stayed there in march the hotel was undergoing construction @ the
time. we go to Vancouver to see medical specialist so we are always
there for @ week @ a time every 6 months now. the staff was very rude @
the front desk<< on the website it did not say anything about
renovations which they tried to tell me it did. one of the main reasons
we booked a room there was location & the swimming pool which was
closed.. only 1 elevator was working and when it did show up 20 minutes
later it was full of the construction workers so we had to wait even
longer.. not to mention if u take the stairs from the 9th floor with a 3
year old & a stroller u always got to move the workers ladders out of
the way..... i was just going to book here again hoping the pool is open
but after reading the reviews i will pass and stay elsewhere. also it
sucked waking up @ 5am to listen to drilling & banging.
