Guest Review of the Blue Horizon Hotel in Vancouver

We have stayed at this older, but nicely refurbished, hotel on several
occasions. The staff at check-in were efficient this time, but on our last
visit, they had the reservation mixed up. The had us in a room with one queen
bed, not a king or 2 queens. They said they were expecting only one guest, when
the reservation printout clearly said two. They admitted their error, but had to
scramble to fnd a suitable room. Next, they had no parking available when the
reservation clearly said we were arriving by car. There was a wait until a spot
could be found. On this visit, almost everything went well, but they did not
have us down for a late check-out, although we were attending a conference that
ended at 3:00pm. The late checkout was arranged but the latest it could be was
1:00pm. I do not understand why a hotel hosts conferences (we have been to
several at this hotel) that end after the latest possible checkout time. Most
conference attendees will wish to return to their rooms and freshen up before
going to the airpost to fly home, or beginning what in many cases is a
several-hours long drive home.

My sister and I spent 4 nights at The Blue Horizon at the end of an Alaskan
Cruise. We were very impressed with the size of the room and the amenities, our
stay was very comfortable. The staff on reception were friendly and helpful and
gave good advice and instructions re catching busses etc. The only thing to
spoil our stay was on the 3rd night we were woken at midnight by some very
inconsiderate guests getting out of the elevator right by our door and talking
very loudly. Oh well we thought inconsiderate but we were soon asleep again. On
our last night we were woken again by the same people who ended up in the room
next door to us. We were awake from 3.30am to after 5am because these people
continued to "party up" both in their room and outside on the balcony where they
were smoking (in a non smoking hotel) I was so frustrated that I complained to
reception twice. The first time they sent security up and although we could hear
the security guy knocking on their door the inhabitants of the room were making
so much noise they couldn't hear the knocking. Security did speak to them twice
regarding the noise but they took no notice and were making as much noise again
before security would have got back to the elevator.
I mentioned our disappointment at the front desk early the next morning when
checking out, they were apologetic and could see that the night staff had noted
that security had been sent to that room twice. I understand it wasn't the fault
of management that these rude people chose to ruin our last nights sleep but I
did think that the security staff member was very ineffective. I felt these
people should have been told to shut up or pack their bags and go. It doesn't
seem fair that we paid good money and certainly did not get a good nights sleep!
I am sorry if I sound like a complainer but this incident marred an otherwise
lovely stay at The Blue Horizon and the beautiful city of Vancouver.

Years ago, we would walk up and down Robson Street in Vancouver, BC, and think
it might be fun to stay at the Blue Horizon some time. Since one of us is from
Vancouver and we have had several friends there who used to billet us, it never
happened. However, we now live in Victoria and planned a trip to stay overnight
on our own. We booked the Blue Horizon, especially happy with the kind of rooms
they offered at very reasonable prices, plus an extremely reasonable and user
friendly parking fee. We arrived well before our check in time, and were greeted
by friendly, customer oriented young people who made us feel right at home. We
found that we also had been "upgraded" to the 19th floor, (it didn't hurt the
review, but our friends had a smaller, lower suite and we liked it, too) and we
were literally, in heaven. We didn't need the two queen beds, but were sure
happy for the more than ample sized room that came with them. With just a few
suites per floor, one already feels private and special. Our suite happened to
have a stunning view, both of sailboats and ships in English Bay and a glimpse
of Coal Harbour. The city lights were also grand. The balcony is such a plus on
these cool but sunny autumn days. We re-arranged our comfy chairs to catch the
views and sort out the weekend papers. What was really great about the room were
the windows, covering nearly 1/2 of the room. We could look out over much of
Vancouver. A good sized TV awaited us - we didn't watch it much but it was a big
number that swivelled towards the bed. The free computer was welcome, after some
of the money-grabs larger hotels have made to give us the same access. Although
the bathroom is pretty much your standard, there was one thing that pleased me:
an exhaust fan, as opposed to those silly vents that are supposed to take away
the steam and what not, and do not.
We were at first concerned about the noise on busy Robson; it was never a
problem. The heating/cooling system, easy to understand an operate, creates the
white noise if it does get loud. We slept well on a well made bed with
comfortable pillows. We didn't get chocolates on our pillow, or a paper at the
door in the morning, but let's not get silly. This was an excellent stay at a
very good price. We are already planning a trip in December. If that isn't a
right response to a good place, nothing is. |
