Hastings Street (MAP) |
Hastings Street is one of the most important Northern
east-west traffic corridors in Vancouver.
Hastings Street in Downtown
Vancouver is known as West Hastings, at Carrall Street which is in
Gastown it becomes East Hastings Street
and runs eastwards through East Vancouver.
Hastings street from the West starts at roughly Coal Harbour then runs east past
such well-known Vancouver landmarks as the Marine Building, the Vancouver Club,
Sinclair Centre,
Harbour Centre, then through the heart of Vancouver's historic original
downtown, the area from Cambie Street heading
east to a few blocks past Main Street is one of
the few areas you want to avoid in Vancouver the troubled Downtown area is home
to seedy pubs, government housing, shelters and drug trafficking.
As you continue east Hastings dissects the largely Italian business core of
Commercial Drive to Nanaimo Street. As you
carry on further east Playland
at the Pacific National Exhibition are on the city of Vancouver's
eastern fringe ending at Boundary Road. The
Pacific Coliseum
and Hastings Race Track are located
at Renfrew St and Hastings
After leaving Vancouver, Hastings forms the core of a Burnaby retail
neighbourhood known as The Heights and then Capitol Hill ending in at the foot
of
Burnaby Mountain where it joins
the Parkway
to the Barnet Highway and on to Port Moody.
