The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, The Jade Canoe
Location: Entrance of the International Terminal
This masterpiece, created by Bill Reid in 1994, features
legendary Haida creatures paddling a boat that "goes on, forever
anchored in the same place."
The Great Wave Wall
Location: Entrance of the International Terminal
This majestic glass wall is a rendition of Hokusai's "Great Wave
of Kanagawa". It was created by Lutz Hauschild in 1996 and
stands behind Bill Reid's Spirit of Haida Gwaii sculpture.
The Spindle Whorl and Welcome Figures
Location: Arrivals hall of the International Terminal
The world's largest Coast Salish Spindle Whorl, designed and
carved by Susan A. Point in 1996, along with two 17-foot
red-cedar welcome figures. The Spindle Whorl hangs from a wall
of granite "shingles" over which water, representing the rivers
of the Coast Salish people, flows.
Musqueam Weavings
Location: Arrivals hall of the International Terminal
In the tradition of Coast Salish art practiced by Musqueam
people, these four beautiful, hand-crafted weavings hand
adjacent to the Welcome Figures and were created in 1995-96 by
Debra Sparrow, Robyn Sparrow, Krista Point, Gina Grant and Helen
Calbreath.
Totem Poles
Location: Outside the main entrance area to the International
Terminal
These poles of the'Ksan heritage were originally carved in the
1960's by Walter Harris and Earl Muldoe and later restored.
Catch the Spirit
Location: In a secure section of the airport accessible only to
travellers in the Domestic Terminal Departures, Area Level 3.
The current exhibit is a selection of sculptures from the Lorne
Balshine Collection of Inuit Sculpture assembled during the past
30 years and now recognized as an important Canadian heritage
collection.
