Walking Downtown Vancouver |
|
Start from Canada Place, walked to and through
Gastown, then back again. If you are staying in a downtown hotel, you may
already be close to the walk. Otherwise, we recommend you consider using the
transit system to get to the walk, as the SkyTrain and SeaBus stop at the
Waterfront station where the walk begins. If you drive, parking is available,
but it may be pricey. |

Your walk starts with a beautiful view of the new Vancouver Convention Centre
and Cruise ship terminal at Canada Place. The upscale Pan Pacific Hotel is part
of Canada Place. Canada Place features a large IMAX theatre.
Walking east from Canada Place, almost next door is the very tall office tower
at Granville Square (at the north end of the Granville Street Walk). There are
wonderful views over the water, and places to sit.
Walking further east, we go under an overpass marking our entrance into Gastown.
Just on the other side is the SkyTrain and SeaBus Waterfront Station building.
Gastown is a very distinct part of the city. It's Old World charm is a major
tourist attraction. Here you will find attractions ranging from shopping,
Restaurants, Galleries and Tourist Shops. Important galleries with superb Native
art and sculpture can be right next to a shop hawking colourful T-shirts and
postcards. Several shops feature Cuban cigars, readily available in Canada. Once
you get to where the street divides walk the extra block then turn back and do
the other side of the street. Do not venture off the main street while it is
safe there is homeless people low cost housing and pan handlers.
When you hit Granville Street turn left or head south, Granville Street is not a
regular downtown street. Several blocks do not allow vehicle traffic except
transit vehicles. Granville is known as the Entertainment district you will find
lots of shopping restaurants, bars and night clubs. The street has under gone
major renovations with the new Sky Train Canada Line and the creation of new
plazas for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Head right on Nelson Street up to Burrard and head left or North back to Canada
Place or wear ever your transportation is.
